Heritage panels telling history of Leicester to be installed around city

Colin Hyde at the East Midlands Oral History Archive has written the text for forty heritage panels that are being installed around Leicester.

Forty panels telling the stories of prominent buildings and places in the city were created in 2014 and proved so popular that another 40 were commissioned and are now being delivered.

Working in partnership with Leicester City Council’s Heritage Manager, Sally Coleman, Colin has researched sites in both the city centre and the suburbs to create the text for the panels.

The first panels are now in place and the City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby and Councillor Piara Singh Clair joined Sally and Colin to launch the panels outside the former Palais de Danse on Humberstone Gate.

Other sites for the panels include the University’s Engineering Building and the former villages of Aylestone, Belgrave, Braunstone, Evington, Humberstone and Knighton.

This collaboration is just one example of several recent projects that have involved partnerships between the City Council and the School of History.
