Contributing to care: Midwifery practice 2

This module is facilitated by a combination of lectures, online learning packages, clinical skills/simulation workshops and clinical practice. Throughout the module, you will learn to contribute to, and provide universal care for all women and newborn infants as well as additional care for those women and newborn infants with complications, under the close supervision and direction of practising midwives and other health and social care practitioners. 

You will continue to develop effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to midwifery practice and the role of the midwife that support childbearing women and their families.  Building on the knowledge, proficiencies and professional behaviours acquired in Year 1, this module will further extend your understanding of the evidence that optimizes normal physiological processes for all women and newborn infants, in order to promote positive outcomes and prevent complications. This will involve exploring the decisions that are made to support appropriate referral of either the woman or newborn infant to other health professionals or agencies for additional care when there is recognition of normal physiological processes being adversely affected or compromised.  The psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual factors that may positively or adversely influence the continuum of normal pregnancy and childbirth physiology will be further explored,  

You will contribute to care through continuity of care models, including undertaking a small caseload of women and follow them through the childbirth continuum and appropriate clinical placements across the range of maternity services. During this module there will be short distinct placements outside of the maternity service but relevant to the role of the midwife: e.g. gynaecology/Early Pregnancy Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in order to address EU Directives for clinical practice. During the placements, you will be encouraged and enabled to develop your achievement of the NMC Standards of proficiency for midwives and EU requirements for midwifery practice and evidence this in the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA), including Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) experiences and the full systematic physical examination of the newborn infant.
