Intermediate Modern Physics: Development of Mechanics, Fractals and Chaos

  • Combine this unit with one other to form the module 'Intermediate Physics Specialisms'

This unit will build on your knowledge in speciality physics by examining methods in classical and quantum mechanics, including Lagrangian methods, fractals and chaos, including deterministic and non-deterministic systems.  You will attend lectures, and workshops, solve problems and discuss topical areas of speciality physics with your peers and staff.

During this unit you will develop skills and problem solving abilities that are essential for understanding areas of speciality physics. Alongside lectures, active problem solving workshops and seminars will supplement your learning.

Topics covered

  • Development of Mechanics: classical and quantum
  • Non-deterministic mechanics: understanding Fractal geometry and routes to Chaos
  • Computational methods in mechanics
