Medieval and Early Modern Europe: People, Power, Faith, and Culture
Module code: HS1001
What are the major themes and debates surrounding medieval and modern European history from 800-1700? How do popular stereotypes of this period differ from the historical evidence?
This module picks apart how Europeans sought to construct and maintain civility, and you'll be debating these various methods. Contextualising people, events and artefacts in a chronological framework will develop your understanding of this period. The value of different approaches to the past is an integral part of the module, which includes social, political, religious and cultural history.
Non-textual as well as textual sources will be investigated, and by asking critical questions about their provenance, purpose, preservation and historical value, you'll gain an in depth understanding about how we have come to view this period.
