Film and Literature
Module code: EN1030
This introductory module critically explores the fascinating relationship between literature and film. In it, we consider the multiple ways in which written and visual texts interact across different modes and genres.
The module focuses on four texts for which there are literary and film versions. In recent years, these have included: The Age of Innocence, The Wandering Earth, If Beale Street Could Talk and Stalker. We will read and watch these primary texts and discuss the potential and challenges of adapting literature for screen in relation to a broader group of films that will be screened weekly.
As well as exploring the specific language and forms of written and cinematic texts, the module introduces you to concepts that bridge the two media, such as narrative voice, spectacle, identities and attention.
