Reading Poetry

How do you read English at University? 'Reading Poetry' is intended to develop students' close-reading skills, introduce you to a range of literary forms, particularly poetry, and encourage you to become a confident, independent learner. You will have frequent opportunities to practise and receive feedback on your critical writing, and to share and discuss your work closely with tutors and peers. In lectures, you'll be introduced to key literary forms and concepts, such as poetic meter, pitch, voice, form and tone; in your seminars, you'll share your own readings of poetry across the centuries. Alongside your lectures and seminars, you will attend a weekly Autonomous Learning Group (of around 5-6 students) in which you will discuss your work in more detail. You will also take part in our study skills workshops, which will help you develop core skills for the degree programme as a whole, such as research, writing, and revising and referencing your work.
