Switched power supplies are widely used in transportation and industrial applications. This module introduces students to the modelling, operation, control, and design of power electronic converters used in modern electrical and electronic engineering systems. It covers the core converter families, including AC/DC, DC/AC, and resanance-based DC/DC converters, with emphasis on their operating principles, component selection, control methods, and practical design considerations.

Students will learn how to analyse and design switching converters, select appropriate power semiconductor devices and passive components, and evaluate converter performance under different operating conditions. The module also includes practical design work involving computer simulation of power electronics control, particularly for isolated power supply applications. Key topics include continuous and discontinuous conduction modes, closed-loop control, gate drivers, thermal interfaces, protection circuits, filters, and ancillary circuit design.
