Throughout this module you’ll be shining a light on contemporary issues and debates in relation to the causes of youth crime, and the responses to young people who break the law. You’ll consider how social and political constructions of young people who offend impact on the nature, extent and treatment of ‘youth crime’ as well. The module will also allow you to engage with media representations of ‘youth crime’ - both factual and fictional.
This module will help you to explore the various ways in which ‘youth’ and ‘youth crime’ are socially and politically constructed, and examine the key trends in detecting youth crime. Studying this topic will evolve your understanding of criminological theory, and expose you to a range of perspectives involved with youthful lawbreaking.
