Text and Material Culture
Module code: AH7701
The module is a focussed introduction to interdisciplinarity in your degree, bringing text and material culture together in a way that will enhance your understanding of the ancient world. By the end, you will be familiar with the wide range of source material available for the study of classical antiquity (including literary texts, inscriptions, papyri, art, pottery, architecture, landscapes, coins, burial archaeology) and understand how they can be brought together to illuminate the past.
You will be able to recognise, describe and use different types of source materials with confidence. You will have mastered the essential terminology used in academic writing to describe ancient texts and material culture, and have an understanding of the potential and limits of the evidence. You will have practical experience of interdisciplinary study. Your assessed presentation will offer the opportunity to develop your skills in visual and verbal presentation while your assessed portfolio will support your skills in close textual and material analysis.
Assessment for this module involves recording a 10 minute presentation on an object biography and producing a source portfolio.
