Sparta and the Greek World

Sparta was one of the greatest – and most perplexing – societies of the ancient world. This module treats ancient Sparta in the widest possible spatial and temporal frame, considering how it changed and developed over time, and its impact on the wider world. The module does not provide a seamless narrative – no module ever could, given the nature of our evidence – but instead looks at the peculiar phenomenon that was Sparta through fragments over time.

The module aims to build on students’ existing knowledge and understanding by examining a range aspects of the society, politics, religion, archaeology and territory of Sparta over a long period. We will consider and discuss key issues in these areas and in Sparta’s interaction with the Peloponnese and the wider Greek world. You will be introduced to relevant translated sources and documents, archaeological data, and secondary literature and the ways in which they can be critically analysed and used in combination, from which you will develop source critique and discussion skills in relation to case studies and key issues.
