South African Foreign Policy

The story of South African foreign policy since independence in 1948 is a turbulent one. It's one of economic sanctions, political isolation, economic divestment, sporting and economic boycotts, chaotic rugby tours, border wars, occupations and dramatic departures from political unions. It's one of clandestine alliances, inward investment from global powers and nuclear weapons. And post-apartheid, it’s one of international co-operation, but not always without controversy either.

This module will introduce you to key themes, debates, actors and makers in South Africa's foreign policy and relations in the apartheid (1948-1994) and post-apartheid periods (1994-present). You'll look at the role of key global actors within South Africa and apply key themes from International Relations within a South African context.
