Politics and Power in Africa

Sub-Saharan African politics has seen much turbulence since the decline of colonialism's hold on the continent in the middle of the 20th century. This module will introduce you to the major political issues and controversies faced by sub-Saharan Africa.

You'll look at the diversity of Africa and assess the usefulness of the term 'Africa' in a political and economic context. You'll examine the ability of African governments and inter-governmental organisations to provide 'African solutions to African problems', a key maxim of the African Union, and understand the agendas of a range of external actors. You'll also look at and interpret the different schools of academic thought on the continent's political economy.
