Preparing for Professional Practice

Module code: MW4004 (double module)

We will prepare you for your professional practice upon successful completion of the course. You will critically evaluate the professional issues that impact on autonomous midwifery practice and care delivery, and analyse the role of a midwife in a dynamic and challenging practice environment. You will debate the various career pathways available to midwives beyond professional registration, and you will construct a personal professional development plan commensurate with an early career midwife leader.

This module will prepare you for your role as a registrant of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, through CV and interview workshops and the process of registration and subsequent revalidation. Exploration of personal strategies to support the transition from senior student to registrant with guest lectures from newly qualified midwives should enable a smoother journey to becoming an autonomous practitioner. Furthermore, your role as a newly qualified midwife and the preceptor/coaching support mechanisms available to you to consolidate your midwifery knowledge and skills will be explored, as well as the strategies that will enable you to continue developing your leadership potential.

As a registrant you will be expected to supervise learners in practice and this module will provide opportunities to prepare you for the role of practice supervisor to student midwives.

This module will be delivered by a combination of lead lectures, structured scenario role play or simulation workshops and practice based learning/clinical practice. The module content and assessment will support your achievement of the Leicester Gold Award.
