Maternal and Neonatal Emergencies
Module code: MW3004 (double module)
Maternity emergencies can occur at any point during pregnancy, childbirth or the postpartum period. In this module the concept of risk management within a midwifery context will be analysed and the principles involved in the maintenance of a safe maternity care and neonatal care environment will be debated. Appropriate midwifery actions necessary for safe resolution of emergency maternity and neonatal care situations will also be critically explored alongside debating the ethical, legal and professional issues related to safe care and emergency service provision for childbearing women, the fetus and baby. Opportunities to practise emergency drills will be provided within the skills laboratory.
The importance of holistic family centred care will be discussed and compared with your clinical experiences. The additional challenges associated with infant feeding will be further explored within the context of maternal and neonatal emergency situations.
