On the one hand global media promotes inclusion and empowerment, but on the other hand it also constructs otherness and exclusion – you’ll be investigating these conflicting processes.
This module will help you to articulate the diverse ethical consequences and challenges raised by technological communication, as public life and relationships with diverse others that are increasingly mediated. You’ll be exploring the many ways in which national and global media promote or inhibit cosmopolitan imagination and sociality, and why this might be. Popular media is often involved in critical issues involving human rights and humanitarianism, and so understanding how it functions and the effect it can have on our opinions and perceptions is critical.
