Media and Democracy

Module Outline

The module deals with theories of democracy and the responsibility of the media; the issues of press freedom and freedom of speech; media, elections and political participation; media and public policy; political and economic pressure and the media; the implication of new communication technologies (e.g. Internet) and media convergence for the development of mediated public spaces and civic resistance. By the end of the module students will be able to contextualise media‐democracy relationships using the cases of both established democratic societies and emerging democracies.
