Accounting Representations: Public and Private Sectors

This module explores the nature of accounting in both the private and public sector from a critical perspective. It takes a close look at the regulatory framework under which accounts are produced as well as the strengths and limitations of the accounts produced.

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Explain the nature and purpose of financial accounting and reporting
  • Discuss the financial reporting environment and regulatory framework in the UK and in the international context
  • Explain and analyse the accounting measurement and reporting practices underlying financial statement items (equity, liabilities, assets and income)
  • Compute and interpret relevant financial ratios and information for assessing companies’ financial health and performance
  • Identify the main differences between public and private organisations
  • Assess main issues in public sector accounting
  • Evaluate public sector organisations performance
