Gain the knowledge and skills to comprehend and effectively manage global crises with MN3165. Explore the complicated nature of disasters and gain the expertise to effectively address the challenges in a society. This module aims to:

  • Demonstrate the complexity and challenges created by contemporary developmental approaches that can lead to disasters and crises related to natural hazards and human-induced threats
  • Show the contribution that the social sciences can make to understanding the nature of contemporary disasters, from catastrophic failures in complex technological systems to the economic damage visited by floods, desertification and other natural hazards
  • Introduce students to the work of leading academics in the field of disaster risk and crisis management, societal inequalities and international development
  • Demonstrate the utility of qualitative analyses of disasters and crisis events
  • Familiarise students with the electronic databases most likely to hold the latest authoritative analyses of disasters and crisis events
  • Ensure that students develop the skills to effectively use these databases to support their research and writing
  • Develop in students the confidence to present their findings to classmates

At the end of the module, you will be able to describe the various risks and crises affecting global society: scientific, technological, social, environmental, humanitarian and political; explain various crises with reference to their specific international and historical contexts; analyse the relationship amongst these various crises and the particular challenges that face economic and social actors/stakeholders.
