This module will introduce you to key theories and debates within the discipline of Management Studies. We will explore some of the concepts and themes which are essential starting points for understanding economies and organisations, people, and the environments in which they work and live. In particular, the module will familiarise you with both orthodox (mainstream) and heterodox (critical) ideas.

Theoretically, we draw on ideas largely from sociology (in which management studies had its origins), economics, and politics, and which may be familiar to those of you who have studied sociology, economics, politics or philosophy before, though prior experience of these subjects is not necessary.

In terms of subject matter, we examine some of the big themes that run throughout the literature on management – equality, ethics, the relationship between workers and employers, and the assumptions that are made about what good management is and what it should strive to be.

In the lectures, we will also look at how you might go about researching the sorts of theories and debates we raise. This will help you in thinking about your third-year dissertation work, which is undertaken throughout both semesters one and two of the third year.
