Mathematics in Business
Module code: MA1254
During this module you will work in groups on case studies taken from real life. It will give you an insight into the problems that arise in applying mathematics in real life situations where, unlike in the class room:
- Problems are often not clearly defined
- Problems do not fall into obvious categories
- It will not be obvious which techniques to use
- The data may not be there
Much of the time will be spent in understanding the problem, working out what needs to be done, what techniques to use, and then reporting back on it, rather than the how to solve the problem mathematically. There will also be problems involving data handling and analysis, which can be addressed most efficiently by using software such as Excel. The case studies will be supported by workshops and seminars on key employability skills such as working in groups, writing reports, giving presentations and spreadsheet design.
