Film and Film Cultures in Historical Contexts
Module code: HA7202
Module Outline
This module explores the complex relationships between films and the societies and cultures in which they have been produced and consumed. You will consider the history of the film industry (both institutional and technological) and the social history of its audiences; and consider how films ‘reflect’ the societies in which they were produced and their role in the construction of national, regional, class, gender and other identities. It will focus on films from Hollywood, Britain and Europe and should allow scope for students to pursue their own particular interests as regards films and film-makers within these broad parameters.
