Earth Observation and Remote Sensing

Module code: GY7028

Remote sensing is collecting data from a distance – without actually being there. We use remote sensing technologies such as satellites and aerial sensors for Earth Observation – to collect data about the Earth’s physical, chemical and biological systems. In this module we will explore how satellite images are constructed from a number of sensors and the physical concepts of remote sensing such as spatial resolution, radiometric resolution and spectral characteristics of the Earth’s surface.

You will perform enhancements, geometric corrections and classifications to remotely-sensed imagery using image processing software. You will gain an understanding of optical, radar and laser scanning systems, and discuss in-depth the applications of remote sensing within a GIS environment.
