Fieldwork Skills for Professional Geographers (BSc & BSc Physical)

Module code: GY1032 

This module introduces to a range of techniques and skills important for the study and practice of physical geography. These include study and presentation skills, working with maps and GPS, basic laboratory skills as well as basic use of a range of measurement instruments. The module also comprises the residential field trip to Devon where field skills will be learned and trained in practice.

Intended learning outcomes

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Critically observe and describe the physical environment using a range of field and laboratory techniques and compile a field notebook
  • Appreciate the spatial and temporal variability of physical phenomena
  • Describe society-environment relationships
  • Communicate geographical concepts and information in a variety of formats
  • Work effectively as a member of a group to collectively explore geographical concepts and tasks
  • Design and execute a small research project
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their individual approach to the study of geography
  • Identify strategies for further developing their skills as a professional geographer
