Journeys, 1700-1830

Module code: EN7226

This module considers how the idea of the 'journey' developed during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, emphasizing continuities between writing on travel in this period and earlier forms of literature. New developments arising from political events, tourism opportunities, and technological advances will be considered. 'Journeys' will be understood both literally – as visits to other places – and metaphorically – as personal development and intellectual formation.
