Love and Death: The Novel in 19th Century Russia and France

Module code: EN3078

An opportunity to read novels in translation which you have always wanted to read - Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina – this module examines the development of the realist novel in two very different contexts, Russia and France. Comparing the work of writers such as Balzac, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, Zola, Tolstoy and Flaubert we can begin to understand how the realist novel has shaped our understanding of ourselves and our world. For those studying Romantic and Victorian literature, this module provides a complementary and contrasting story of how political and cultural revolution unfolded on the continent. This is a module for readers who would like to know first-hand some of the masterpieces of world literature, such as crime and punishment.
