Aerospace Materials

Module code: EG7038

Advanced materials are critical to advanced aerospace vehicles, whether deep inside the hottest part of a jet engine or for the main structure of large aerodynamic components like wings. This module explains why different materials are used for different components of air and spacecraft and how materials processing and microstructure contributes to the properties needed to make aircraft a success. The module will cover aluminium, titanium and nickel alloys, polymer composite materials, exotic light metals like magnesium alloys and beryllium and smart or multifunctional materials. By the end you will be able to explain why each of these materials are suitable and select an appropriate family of material, alloy and heat treatment for a given application.
