Digital Communications

Module code: EG7022

This module will be delivered through a series of seminars and practical sessions, where the theoretical aspects of this module will be complemented with extensive practical exercises using Simulink based computer modelling. You will develop a broad understanding of the components of a digital communication system, together with an appreciation of the limitations of these systems and the techniques employed to mitigate the limitations.

Topics covered

  • Introduction to Simulink and the Communications Toolbox
  • Baseband digital transmission
  • Bit error rate and signal to noise ratio
  • Eye diagrams and constellation diagrams as quality diagnostics
  • Bandwidth and data-rate
  • Carrier and modulation methods
  • The trade-off between throughput and quality
  • Source coding
  • Channel coding to reduce errors
  • Digital communications through fading multipath channels
  • Interleaving
