Digital Communications
Module code: EG7022
This module will be delivered through a series of seminars and practical sessions, where the theoretical aspects of this module will be complemented with extensive practical exercises using Simulink based computer modelling. You will develop a broad understanding of the components of a digital communication system, together with an appreciation of the limitations of these systems and the techniques employed to mitigate the limitations.
Topics covered
- Introduction to Simulink and the Communications Toolbox
- Baseband digital transmission
- Bit error rate and signal to noise ratio
- Eye diagrams and constellation diagrams as quality diagnostics
- Bandwidth and data-rate
- Carrier and modulation methods
- The trade-off between throughput and quality
- Source coding
- Channel coding to reduce errors
- Digital communications through fading multipath channels
- Interleaving
