Understanding and Managing Children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties

This option is for professionals working with children and young people who are experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties in mainstream and special schools, pupil referral units, care or other settings. You will develop the understanding and skills necessary to work effectively with this vulnerable group and achieve better outcomes. This is the only programme in the UK endorsed by SEBDA, the Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties Association.

Topics covered

This option provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your practice and network with colleagues from other settings, as well as enabling you to gain a better understanding of the needs of children and young people with SEBD/SEMH and of how to respond to those needs. You will develop your range of practical responses by widening your knowledge and understanding of:

  • Effective provision for children and young people with SEBD/SEMH in a variety of settings
  • Legislation and guidance relating to SEBD/SEMH
  • Emotional development and wellbeing
  • Theories influencing approaches to working with children and young people with SEBD/SEMH
  • Developments in neuroscience
    • Working with families and other services or agencies.
    • Assessment tools
