Policing and Diversity

Module code: CR2030

The representativeness of the police service, and the relationship between the public and the police, is fundamental to police legitimacy. This module examines policing and diversity in two ways. First, we'll explore the historical and contemporary developments in diversity within the police service, and consider the challenges of representation in the police service. Second, we'll explore the relationship between the police and minority communities. Here, the module documents the historical conflicts and tensions in the policing of minority groups and critically examines the effectiveness of contemporary reforms in transforming policing practice. The impact of policing practices, such as stop and search, is a particular focus. The criminalisation of minority groups, and the relationship between the police and minority groups as victims, is also an important part of this module. By taking this module, you'll be equipped with a critical understanding of the key debates and issues in policing and diversity.
