Introduction to Policing

Policing is shaped by historical debates and developments, many of the contemporary issues we discuss today have historical roots. This module traces the development of contemporary policing and considers the relationship between the police and the wider criminal justice system. In the lectures and the workshop discussions and activities, we explore the historical, political, social and economic pressures for change in the police. You will learn about the role of the police, police powers, responsibilities and accountabilities. We will also begin to examine the difference between the police as an institution and policing as a practice. You will be taught by lecturers with policing expertise and from a multi-disciplinary perspective to equip you with an essential introduction to the key principles, concepts and debates to begin your journey towards thinking critically about the police and policing.
