Module code: AR7066

The focus of this module will be on key classical sites and monuments in the Mediterranean. Before the trip you’ll develop your skills and understanding of the archaeological remains of key classical sites, and monuments in the visited site.

You’ll be discussing change of monuments over time through different periods of antiquity, and critically analysing the presentation of classical sites and monuments. By the end of the module you’ll recognise the many source types available for understanding monuments, and be able to synthesise and appraise research in the history, archaeology, architecture and art of the study site. This module aims to:

• Develop an understanding of the archaeological remains of key classical sites and monuments in the visited region of the Mediterranean
• Consider change in the study region and its environs over time during different periods of antiquity
• Recognise key facets of architectural form and evolution from Antiquity into the Middle Ages
• Encourage an awareness of the practicalities of carrying out research in the field.
• Stimulate critical assessment of the presentation of classical sites and monuments to visitors and tourists, and consider issues of conservation and heritage management.
