Ethnicity and Diversity in American Life, from Emancipation to the Present
Module code: AM2014
In order to gain a full understanding of modern America, it is essential to analyse the role that the diversity of its population has played in the nation’s development. From slavery to voting irregularities in the 2000 Presidential election, the treatment of America’s ethnic groups has played a conspicuous role in US history.
This course will examine the ways in which ethnic identities are constructed, before paying close attention to African, Native, Hispanic and White Americans, analysing their place in a single, 'American' identity, and the ways in which they have attempted to struggle against oppression.
