Migration Mobility and Citizenship Network

The Migration, Mobility and Citizenship (MMC) Network has been created with the aim to foster new interdisciplinary collaborations concerning migration, mobility and citizenship within and across the University’s three Colleges and will be the vehicle by which we attract significant research grant income, build capacity, enhance the research environment and develop real-world impact. The network aims to draw inspiration from the lived experience of mobility, migration and citizenship in the everyday lives of the residents of Leicester and beyond. Socially, economically and culturally Leicester’s communities and institutions have been transformed by migration in the post-war era. The location of the University gives the network access to this migration resource, enabling comparisons with migration processes in other larger (and smaller) urban locations.

The Diversity of EU Citizens in Leicester

University of Leicester, 23 April 2024

On 23 April, the University of Leicester welcomes community representatives to a meeting on The Diversity of EU Citizens in Leicester. The meeting is jointly organised by the University’s migration and citizenship research group, and by New Europeans UK.

The background to the meeting is that the most recent census results showed that in 2021 nearly 9% of the population of Leicester were EU passport holders from ethnic minorities. This percentage is probably the highest for any local authority in the United Kingdom.

The category is a highly mixed one, both in Leicester as elsewhere. It includes Portuguese, Italian and other EU citizens of South Asian heritage, EU citizens of African heritage from a range of countries, as well as Roma and Latin Americans.

The purpose of the meeting is an exchange of information and experiences concerning EU citizens from diverse communities in Leicester, and the specific challenges that they face.

For the academic researchers involved, the meeting is a first step in a research project on the establishment and situation of diverse EU communities, in Leicester and elsewhere.

The meeting will also showcase the support by New Europeans for applications to the EU settlement scheme, with particular reference to minority communities in Leicester and surrounding areas.
