Culture, Identity, and Representation
Module code: SY3015
In this module you will analyse theories and concepts of identity, culture, and representation; examine their interconnections; and consider their political ramifications in relation to gender, race, and sexuality. There are three major sections to the module:
- Main theories of representation, identity, and culture including Marxism, the Birmingham school of contemporary cultural studies, constructionism, and essentialism
- Sociological and cultural theory and politics relating to the topics of gender/masculinity, sexuality, and race
- The 'turn to culture' and the rise of poststructural theory, including the work of Foucault and Butler
