Family History: Contexts, Identity and Belonging

Module code: HS7131

Interest in family history has grown in recent years, partly due to TV shows such as the BBC's "Who Do You Think You Are?" and new technologies such as the Internet making it easier to access genealogical resources. In this module, you'll explore familial history in depth, particularly within a regionally comparative historical context.

You'll look at wider developments affecting the study of familial history and discuss some of the key current debates in the field, such as the study of the household, historical demography, marriage and re-marriage, migration and related historical issues. You'll also compare the histories of the family across time and space.
