Stormtroops, Iron Guard and Arrow Cross: Fascism and Genocide in Eastern Europe, 1938-1945

The formation of the Fascist movement by Mussolini, and its takeover of the Italian state in 1922, inspired right wing groups all around Europe to call themselves fascists. Many countries adjusted to the Italian methods, including the German Nazis.

This course will trace the fascist movements in Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Yugoslavia, Romania and other Eastern European countries. You’ll discuss the similarities and differences of these movements in seminars, and see how brandishing right wing ideologies translates into practise, while reviewing the historiography of fascism in Europe.
