Language and Cultures in the Francophone World

In this module, we'll explore the place of the French language within the Francophone world, including some of the key historical, sociopolitical, and cultural frameworks within which the language has evolved in various geographical areas. We will consider the role played by the language in constructing complex national, local, ethnic, gender, and postcolonial identities. Case studies will include France, Belgium, Algeria and the Maghreb, Senegal and sub-Saharan Africa, and Quebec.
