Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/CELTA

Our two-module first year option in Teaching English as a Foreign Language introduces you to the principles of effective teaching, develops practical teaching skills and gives you substantial hands-on teaching experience. These modules are delivered by our English Language Teaching Unit exclusively for students on the BA in English.
The two modules combine to provide a course of study that leads to the highly respected Cambridge CELTA qualification. The CELTA is internationally recognised by English language teaching organisations, giving you a great opportunity to live and work abroad and in the UK. These modules will also help you to develop a range of transferable skills required for both academic and professional settings, including team working, communicative competence and self-management.
The modules are taught through a combination of interactive input sessions, observations of experienced teachers, and teaching practice with volunteer international students. The teaching practice forms a significant part of both modules giving you the opportunity to translate theory into practice and building your confidence and ability to teach.
Please note that the numbers on this option are strictly limited and that an application process is used to select participants for these modules. You will need to submit an application form and complete some course related tasks. Selected applicants will then be invited to an interview (if necessary conducted via Skype). This process is a Cambridge requirement for participation on CELTA courses.
You will be able to submit your application form after you receive your confirmation email from the University of Leicester. You will be notified by email of the submission deadline. If your application is successful, you will be invited to attend a Skype interview shortly afterwards.
