Advanced Physical Chemistry

Module code: CH7041

In this module, you will explore exciting concepts in the physical chemistry of modern nanoscience and nanotechnology. You'll look at the underlying principles of the physical properties, characterisation techniques and analytical methods and how to apply these to chemical and biological technologies using a variety of organic and inorganic materials.

You will study various microscopy techniques and analytical methods relevant to the physical characterisation of nanomaterials and the ability to understand how to design these materials for practical applications. You'll get the chance to apply your knowledge by understanding these principles and how they can determine key properties to solve chemical and biological problems in the real world, presenting the data you've obtained clearly and concisely.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the forces operating between nanoscale objects and appreciate methods of physical chemistry within nanotechnology (optical, electron microscopy, probe microscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and surface plasmon resonance)
  • Show insight into the nature, mechanism and dynamics of a range of physical and chemical processes
  • Be able to discuss a range of methods for fabricating organic and inorganic nanomaterials for use in chemical and biomedical systems and devices
  • Appreciate how structure affects biological and chemical properties relevant to risk, governance and regulation
