Microbiology 2

Module code: BS2024

This module covers the biology of organisms too small to be seen with the unaided eye (excluding bacteria), and the working of the vertebrate immune system. You will study the major features of immunology, virology and eukaryotic microbiology and learn how to conduct simple microbiological and immunological procedures, including the interpretation and presentation of lab results.

A week-long field course forms part of this module.

Topics covered

  • Immunology: the vertebrate response to infection; background to the structure and function of the immune system at the cellular and molecular level
  • Virology: replication of viruses; viruses as causes of disease including cancer
  • Eukaryotic: biology and technological applications of fungi (including yeasts); protozoa as human parasites
