This module will enable you to formulate knowledge of hunter-gatherer lifeways from a range of anthropological and ethnographic source materials. You’ll construct a critical understanding of archaeological approaches to the study of hunter-gatherers, and discover the current political debates about hunter-gatherers in the 21st Century.

You’ll be analysing the major themes in hunter-gatherer studies by analysing multi-media and written source material. There will be two museum trips, one to Pitts Rivers Museum and the other to Cresswell Crags to look at Palaeolithic rock art. This module aims to:

  • Critically evaluate a period through engagement with anthropological and ethnographic frameworks
  • Introduce students to the range of different types of source material
  • Demonstrate critical awareness of current political debates about hunter-gatherers in the 21st Century
  • Develop written skills which will allow students to bring together the range of material in a critical analysis

Upon successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Evaluate and summarise multi-media and written source material about hunter-gatherers
