Policing and Terrorism

Module code: CR3035

The problem of terrorism is highly present in public discourse, the ‘war against terror’ is a prominent feature of politics and the media. This module draws on criminological, sociological and political perspectives of terrorism to explore the complex and contentious relationship between society, policing and terrorism. The lectures and workshops consider the policing response to terrorism within a historical, cultural and political context. Drawing on specific terrorist campaigns and counter terrorism measures, we discuss the implications for communities and populations. Throughout this module, we examine the taken-for-granted assumptions underpinning concepts such as security, fear, belonging and differences.
