Federico García Lorca

This module aims to examine the contribution made to Spanish culture by one of its leading playwrights and poets of the twentieth-century, Federico García Lorca. It will focus on a study of plays derived from his rural trilogy which portray the broad theme of freedom versus suppression in Spanish society in the 1930s. On successful completion of this module you will be able to: identify the recurrent themes in the theatre and poetry of Federico García Lorca and relate them to the condition of Spanish society in the 1930s as well as to the wider cultural context; give effective oral presentations on selected themes; demonstrate an awareness of critical readings of Lorca’s work; present informed written evaluations of the literature using an appropriate academic register.
