Molecular Cell Biology and Genomes

Module code: NT3004

'Molecular Cell Biology’ is centred on the principal techniques used in molecular cell biology and allows you to develop your ability to design experiments to test a hypothesis, based on the use of these techniques.

This module will summarise cell ultrastructure, with a focus on the cytoskeleton and organelles involved in synthesis and trafficking of intracellular and secreted proteins. By providing a thorough outline of cell signalling pathways, with a focus on the molecular features of receptors, signal transducers and second messengers, you will develop your understanding of the principles of cell cycle control in eukaryotes. Practical sessions will reinforce and supplement your learning and will illustrate some key methods in cell biology. A major aim of these activities will be to provide you with the knowledge and experience of these techniques and how they can address a specific research question. This module will also illustrate the techniques of modern molecular genetics applied to investigate the organisation, evolution and maintenance of the integrity of genomes. You’ll look at a wide range of genomes, including those of bacteria, yeast, insects and humans.
