Module code: NT2002

Evolution by Natural Selection is the fundamental theorem of the biosciences, and it is a concept which is increasingly applied to other areas including computing, economics and statistics. This module aims to introduce the fundamental concept of evolution by selective adaptation and then to analyse in-depth examples of evolutionary change in plants and hominids.

Topics covered

  • Genetic Variation
  • Variation through sexual and lateral gene transfer
  • Natural selection
  • Speciation
  • Changes that result in novelty
  • Quantitative genetics
  • Human evolution
  • DNA sequencing
  • Analysis of ancient DNA
