Midwifery Practice 1

Module code: MW1001 (double module)

This module will be delivered through a series of lectures, workshops, simulation in the skills laboratory and clinical practice, where you will learn, participate and initiate the care and support of women, throughout childbirth under the direct supervision of practising midwives.

You will develop effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to midwifery practice and the role of the midwife to support women and their families throughout the childbirth continuum. This will involve developing a sound, evidence based knowledge that facilitates the physiology of childbirth and the care of the newborn baby, including infant feeding practices, and applying this to practice. The psychological, social, emotional and spiritual factors that may positively or adversely influence normal childbirth physiology will also be explored alongside discussions of women’s experiences of normal physiological childbirth by utilising evidence from your small midwifery caseload.
