Introduction to Heritage and Interpretation

This module will teach you to:

  • Develop an understanding of the historical development of ‘heritage’ as a concept and demonstrate an awareness of the disciplinary frameworks of heritage and their contested nature
  • Distinguish between and discuss different definitions of heritage and the values attributed to them in different societies and amongst various communities today, including notions of tangible and intangible heritage
  • Understand how interpretive processes and practices affect the ways in which heritage is practised and understood
  • Demonstrate familiarity with UK and international policies and practices in heritage
  • Show an ability to work with a range of sources and data to develop and substantiate a critical argument
