Ethical Practice: Access, Liberation, and Organisational Change

Module code: MU7562

Ethical frameworks and approaches to museum and gallery work are cornerstones of a socially engaged practice. Understanding the ethical implications of working in partnership with communities as well as acknowledging and dismantling the historic and contemporary power imbalances within cultural organisations forms a strong basis for working authentically towards liberation.

This module builds on these ideas by exploring ethical ways of working and the relationships between museums and their stakeholders. It further draws out the importance of building an organisational culture which prioritises ethical relationships, liberation, and accessibility.

The notion of leadership – as potentially practiced at all levels of an organisation and a key factor in developing and championing socially engaged practice – is explored in depth in this module.
