Introduction to Filmmaking

Module code: MS2003

Introduction to Filmmaking is one of the most demanding yet rewarding modules, and students who participate regularly cite it amongst their favourites. Over the course of the module you'll be taught the theories and practicalities involved in documentary film.

The central aim of the module is to provide you with a practical experience of filmmaking, as well as a deeper critical understanding of the production process through theoretical reflection and peer assessment.

There is ample opportunity to learn the basics of camera operation, direction, sound recording, lighting and editing whilst getting hands on experience of what it is like to work as part of a film crew. After learning the ropes and researching/planning, groups are sent out with professional filming kit to create their production. You'll get the opportunity to edit your work in the School’s state of the art Media Lab on Apple iMacs using industry standard software such as Adobe Premiere Pro.

At the end of the editing process there is a screening where we celebrate everybody’s work, and offer the opportunity for peer assessment and reflection.
