Scientific Computing

Module code: MA3012

This module will introduce you to numerical approaches to scientific problems, as they arise in various applications. The list of possible problems where computers can be used is very large.  The emphasis of this module is on practical knowledge of the algorithms, as well as the methods for error estimation and analysis.

In this module we will introduce the most widely used methods and algorithms, for example:

  • Solution of linear and nonlinear equations
  • Polynomial and piece-wise polynomial interpolation
  • Fast Fourier Transform
  • Numerical differentiation and integration
  • Linear least-squares approximation
  • Numerical solution of ordinary differential equations
